정원사 - 메리 올리버

 

나는 충분히 살았을까?

나는 충분히 사랑했을까?

올바른 행동에 대해 충분히 고심한 후에 

        결론에 이르렀을까?

나는 충분히 감사하며 행복을 누렸을까?

나는 우아하게 고독을 견뎠을까?

 

나는 그런 말을 해, 아니 어쩌면

그냥 생각만 하고 있는건지도 모르지.

         사실, 난 생각이 너무 많은 것 같아.

 

그러곤 정원으로 걸어 들어가지,

단순한 사람이라는 말을 듣는 정원사가

         그의 자식들인 장미를 돌보고 있는.

Have I lived enough?
Have I loved enough?
Have I considered Right Action enough, have I 

           come to any conclusion?
Have I experienced happiness with sufficient gratitude?
Have I endured loneliness with grace?

 

I say this, or perhaps I’m just thinking it.

           Actually, I probably think too much.

 

Then I step out into the garden,
where the gardener, who is said to be a simple man,
            is tending his children, the roses.
