고별사 : 슬픔을 금하며 - 존 던   

 

덕있는 사람들은 조용히 죽어가며

자신의 영혼에게 가자고 속삭이고

그러는 동안 슬퍼하던 친구들은

이제 운명하나보다, 혹은 아니다, 라고 말한다 

 

우리도 태연히 소란피우지 말며

홍수 같은 눈물, 폭풍 같은 한숨을 일으키지 말자.

속인들에게 우리의 사랑을 말하는 것은

우리의 기쁨을 모독하는 것이니. 

 

지구의 움직임은 재난과 두려움을 가져오고,

사람들은 그 피해가 어떤지 안다

하지만 천체의 움직임은,

더 큰 움직임일지라도, 아무 해가 없다    

 

달빛 아래 우둔한 연인들의 사랑은

(오직 그들의 영혼은 관능뿐이어서)

이별을 받아들이지 못하니,

육체가 서로 헤어지면 그 사랑을 이루고 있던 것도 사라지기 때문이다 

 

그러나 우리는 그토록 고결해진 사랑으로

우리 조차도 그것이 무엇인지 모른 채

서로의 마음을 믿으니

눈과 입과 손을 못 본대서 근심할 것은 없다 

 

그러므로 우리의 영혼은 하나이기에

비록 나는 떠나야 하지만

그것은 단절이 아니라 확장일 뿐

마치 두들겨 공기처럼 얇게 편 금박과도 같이 

 

만약 우리 영혼이 둘이라면 똑같이 생긴

뻣뻣한 컴퍼스 다리가 둘이듯이 그렇게 둘이리라

당신의 영혼, 그 고정된 다리는 움직이지 않지만

다른 한쪽이 움직이면 따라서 움직인다

그것은 중심에 자리잡고 있으나

다른 한쪽이 먼 곳을 배회하면

몸을 기울여 그 쪽에 귀 기울이고

그것이 제자리로 돌아오면 다시 꼿꼿이 선다

당신은 나에게 그런 존재

나는 다른 쪽 다리처럼 비스듬히 달려야 하지만

당신의 확고함이 내 원을 똑바르게 하고

내가 시작한 곳으로 돌아오게 한다

As virtuous men pass mildly away,

And whisper to their souls, to go,

Whilst some of their sad friends do say,

"The breath goes now," and some say, "No"

So let us melt, and make no noise,

No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move;

'Twere profanation of our joys

To tell the laity our love. 

 

Moving of the earth brings harms and fears,

Men reckon what it did, and meant;

But trepidation of the spheres,

Though greater far, is innocent. 

 

Dull sublunary lovers' love

(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit

Absence, because it doth remove

Those things which elemented it.

But we by a love so much refined,

That ourselves know not what it is,

Inter-assured of the mind,

Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.

Our two souls therefore, which are one,

Though I must go, endure not yet

A breach, but an expansion,

Like gold to airy thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so

As stiff twin compasses are two

Thy soul, the fix'd foot, makes no show

To move, but doth, if the' other do.

And though it in the centre sit,

Yet when the other far doth roam,

It leans, and hearkens after it,

And grows erect, as that comes home. 

 

Such wilt thou be to me, who must

Like th' other foot, obliquely run;

Thy firmness makes my circle just,

And makes me end, where I begun.
